Detroit, Mich. – The No. 11 Lewis University men's lacrosse team began their season with an dominant 23-9 win against Northwood Friday afternoon at Detroit County Day School in the first game of the year for both squads.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Carter Korzenski (Orchard Park, N.Y./Limestone) and
Paul Ruskoski (Tulsa, Oklahoma/Bishop Kelley HS) led the Lewis offense with four goals each while
Malikye Good (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic HS) and
Kohl Wesner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) each notched a hat trick. Wesner, Korzenski and Josh Schefle each tallied three assists to tie the match-high. On the defensive side of the ball,
Dylan Kendrick (Chanhassen, Minnesota/Chanhassen HS) collected seven ground balls while
Jackson Marindin (White Hall, Maryland/The John Carroll School) caused two turnovers. In net,
Caden Donahue (Hugo, Minnesota/Mahtomedi HS) earned the win with 12 saves across 35 minutes of action.
Ryder Mulvey paced Northwood offense with three goals while in net Easton Beukema had a team-high 10 saves in 48:48 of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis took flight early as they tallied five of the first six goals of the contest with Ruskoski and Wesner both finding the back of the net twice. The Flyers and Timberwolves exchanged goals as the first stanza ended with Lewis ahead, 6-2.
The second quarter belonged to the Flyers as they tallied seven consecutive goals, paced by four scores from Korzenski, while only allowing one goal from Northwood to enter the locker room with a 13-3 advantage.
Out of the break, the red and white rattled off the first three goals of the new half, with Good, Schefle and
Liam Forsyth (Webster, N.Y./Winchendon School) each finding the back of the net, to expand their advantage to 13, 16-3. After a Andrew Rodgers Northwood goal, the Flyers embarked on another uninterrupted scoring run, this time being a 5-0 spurt paced by a pair of goals from Camden Rapis and Davis Psyer, to push their lead to a then game-best 17, 21-4, with 1:17 left in the third.
Lewis and Northwood exchanged goals to close the third and throughout the fourth quarter with Lewis never letting their lead dip below double-digits en route to their 23-9 win.
Lewis ended the contest with a 51-34 advantage in shots and 47-33 lead in ground balls. The Flyers were also 23-of-26 on clears compared to 16-of-24 for Northwood.
