HAMMOND, Ind. — Sarah Newberry (Fairfield, Ohio/Stephen T Badin) and Caroline Impey (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) combined for 31 kills to help propel the Lewis women's volleyball team past Walsh, 3-1, on the final day of the Midwest Crossover.
The win brought the Flyers to 12-10, while the Cavaliers fell to 12-9.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Newberry tallied a match-high 18 kills, while Impey added 13. Kaileigh Krawiec (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) dished out a career-high 45 assists to aid the Flyers' winning effort.
On defense, four Flyers recorded 10 or more digs, led by Kynzie Lilly's (Richmond, Texas/Southwest Baptist) 19. At the net, Newberry again led the way with seven total blocks (three solo and four assisted).
Maria Montseny paced Walsh with a team-high 14 kills, while Emerson Sheets recorded 23 assists. Cara Riley led the match with 21 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis sprinted out of the gate, scoring 10 of the first 13 points of the opening set, while Newberry led with three kills. The Flyers never looked back, keeping the Cavaliers at bay while posting a .306 hitting percentage (14 kills, three errors, 36 attempts) to win the first set, 25-18, and take a 1-0 match lead.
Tied at 12-12 midway through the second set, Walsh broke the deadlock when a Maggie Rolwing kill sparked a 6-1 run that pushed the Cavaliers ahead, 18-13. The Flyers slowly chipped away at their opponents' lead, and a late 7-2 run, highlighted by three kills from Ella Skogman (Waukesha, Wis/Waukesha West), brought Lewis within one point at 23-22. However, Montseny tallied consecutive kills to thwart the Flyers' late push and give Walsh a 25-22 second-set win, tying the match at 1-1.
Trailing 18-15 in the third set, the Flyers turned the tide when a timely Hannah Dietzenbach (Fall River, Wis./Fall River) kill sparked an 8-2 run that put Lewis up 23-20. Despite consecutive Walsh points that trimmed the Lewis lead to one, 23-22, the Flyers held on, scoring two of the next three points on kills by Impey and Hadley Rogge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) to win the set, 25-23, and take a 2-1 match lead.
Lewis sealed the 3-1 victory in the final set with a 6-1 run midway through the frame, followed by an uninterrupted 6-0 run later in the set. The Flyers defeated the Cavaliers, 25-18, to secure the match.
