Rosemont, Ill. – The Lewis University softball team picked up their first win of the Dome Invitational as they defeated Parkside, 5-4, Wednesday evening at the Rosemont Dome. Earlier in the day, the Flyers fell to Minnesota Duluth, 10-2, in their first game of the tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS UMD
The Bulldogs stuck first as they tacked on four runs in the top of the second inning off a mix of timely hits and steals.
The visitors extended their lead in the sixth as a Morgan McMillan single into right field drove in two runs and made it a 6-0 contest.
Down 10-0 in the bottom of the sixth after four runs from UMD in the top half of the inning, the Flyers began to chip away at the Bulldogs lead thanks to singles from
Katie Jensen (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) single and
Nicole Magdziasz (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) to make it a 10-2 ballgame. Still, the Bulldogs took out the final two Lewis batters to secure the 10-2 win.
Emmie Sylvia-Cochran earned the win, going 3.0 innings and only allowing three hits. McMillian led the UMD bats with a team-best three hits.
Jolee Strohmeyer (Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque Senior) went the distance for Lewis, pitching the whole contest. Magdziasz,
Chloe Kohnhorst (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) and Strohmeyer led Lewis with two hits each.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS PARKSIDE
Parkside opened the scoring in the top of the first as CICI Di Silvo doubled to left center to drive in her teammate Mia Johnson.
Lewis knotted the contest in the bottom of the first as an error from Parkside allowed
Kristen Graham (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs High School) to reach first and Magdziasz to touch home plate and tie the contest. The very next batter, the Flyers took the lead for the first time in the evening as
Anna Frafjord (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton High School) sent a ball over the outfield wall, making it a 3-1 ballgame.
Parkside tied the game the next half inning as a pair of singles from Johnson and Kendall Woods made it 3-3.
The red and white took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning as Kohnhorst singled to the shortstop to drive in
Erica Hoffman (Hebron, Ind./Boone Grove High School). The Flyers added insurance in the bottom of the third thanks to a
Katie Jensen (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) double that brought home Frafjord.
Despite a Parkside run in the fifth that cut the Lewis lead to one, 5-4, the Flyers did not waiver with Gust retiring the final four batters she faced to secure the win.
Gust went the distance for Lewis, allowing eight hits with three strike outs. Frafjord led the Flyers with three hits and two RBI.
Ellie Curtis of Parkside was charged for the loss, tossing 3.0 innings and allowing six hits with five runs. Johnson, Silvio and Taylor Utrata each tied for the team lead in hits with two.
