Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team couldn't overcome a six-point third quarter in a 59-56 loss to Illinois Springfield Thursday (Feb. 19) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest. Lewis falls to 15-10 overall, 11-6 in the GLVC.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Mallory Ramage (Mattoon, Ill./Loyola Chicago) led the Flyers with 13 points, while
Ally Cesarini (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Juilia Mingus had 16 points and Kayla Rice scored 15 points for the Prairie Stars.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams traded baskets early in the game as the Prairie Stars led 7-6 midway through the first quarter. Lewis scored the next eight points behind four points from Cesarini to take a 14-7 lead with 1:40 left in the first quarter. Lewis led 14-10 after the first quarter.
The Prairie Stars came back to tie the score at 17-17 with 7:43 left in the half, but baskets by Ramage and Samantha Campanelli gave the Flyers a 21-17 lead. Lewis maintained its lead and was ahead 34-30 at the half.
Illinois Springfield opened the second half with a 13-0 run as the Flyers didn't score until a
Yahaira Bueno (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) layup with 3:08 left in the quarter cut the deficit to 43-36. A Bueno conventional three-point play cut the deficit to 44-40 after three quarters.
Lewis retook the lead at 47-46 on a Ramage layup with 5:33 left and free throws from
Mercy Lasu (Winnipeg, Canada/D'Youville) made it 49-46 with 4:30 remaining. The teams traded leads until a three-pointer from the Prairie Stars gave them the lead for good at 53-51 with 2:47 left.
The Flyers had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but a missed three pointer and a turnover ended the game.
GAME NOTES
- Cesarini's 14 rebounds were a career-high, eclipsing the 12 she had in her previous outing against McKendree last Saturday.
- Lewis outrebounded Illinois Springfield 40-29 and had 19 offensive rebounds.
- The Flyers shot 2-for-12 in the third quarter and did not get an offesive rebound in the quarter.
