Viera, Fla. - The Lewis University softball team won in dominant fashion early Wednesday morning against Post University 13-2 and won their second game of the day 6-5, this time facing Molloy University in the Space Coast Spring Games Series.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
Lewis' high scoring performance kicked off at the top of the first inning with two runs, three hits and one player left on base, wasting no time on offense. The Flyers' first two runs came at the hands of
Nicole Magdziasz (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic High School), who was positioned at second base, and
Kristen Graham (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs High School), who scored following a throwing error.
The Flyers' batting precision was put on full display at the top of the second inning, with a hit by
Ariana Trausch (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove High School) that allowed to go all the way to third base.
Erica Hoffman's (Hebron, Ind./Boone Grove High School) hit saw her reach second, which gave Trausch the opportunity to run to the home plate to add another run to Lewis' score. Hoffman followed that by advancing to third plate after a hit by Magdziasz. After a hit by
Katie Jensen (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) tripled to center field, Magdziasz and Hoffman scored two additional runs for the Flyers, putting them up 5-1. Jensen's efforts didn't stop there as she also scored a run, ending the Flyers' side of the first inning 6-1
The top of the third was also packed with runs for the Flyers, as
Morgan Spodarek (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) scored on a passed ball, while Trausch scored her second run of the game and
Teagan Berkshire (/Lincoln-Way Central) scored her first of the game. The Flyers' third inning action saw them go up 9-1 on the scoreboard.
The top of the fourth was no different for the Flyers in terms of runs scored, as they had a four-run inning for the second time in the game, the first being during the second inning. With the bases loaded, a hit by
Chloe Kohnhorst (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) gave the Flyers the opportunity to score three runs from the loaded bases.
Tori Richardson (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park),
Anna Frafjord (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton High School), and Chloé Gust all got to the home plate, bringing the score to 12-2. Kohnhorst's fourth inning efforts didn't end with her previous hit, as she scored the Flyers' final run, making the final score a dominant 13-2.
Angelica Tompkins and Tatiana Martinez scored Post University's two runs of the game at the bottom of the first and third inning respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO
The game didn't start out how the Flyers expected, as they went down 3-0 during the first inning, allowing 5 hits in the process. However, they were quick to bounce back at the bottom of the second, with
Anna Frafjord (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton High School) opening the score after being positioned at third base following her own hit that went down right field, giving her time to get to third base. A hit by
Morgan Spodarek (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) meant that Frafjord comfortably got to home plate to put the Flyers on the scoreboard. Runs by Spodarek and Chloe Konhorst followed, tying the score at three runs each. The Flyers finished the second inning with three runs, four hits, no errors, and one player left on base.
After a quiet third inning, Lewis took the lead of the game with two more runs by Spodarek and Konhorst at the bottom of the fourth, adding one more run each to their total. Molloy University had ended their side of the inning with one hit and one player left on base, but they failed to convert that into a run.
Following a fifth inning that saw a combined one hit and one player left on base from both teams, Molloy tied things up with two runs at the top of the sixth.
With a score of five runs each, the Flyers knew that they had to close the game out during the seventh to win their second game of the day. The Flyers did that exactly, as they didn't allow any runs or hits from Molloy, meaning that the game was now heading to the bottom of the inning, giving the Flyers the opportunity to take the victory. Lewis'
Teagan Berkshire (/Lincoln-Way Central) had advanced to second base, and after a hit by
Erica Hoffman (Hebron, Ind./Boone Grove High School) that went down the left side, Berkshire scored the run the Flyers needed to win the game.
With a final score of 6-5, the Flyers end their Florida trip with six wins and two losses at the Space Coast Spring Games Series. The Flyers' record is now 9-9 overall.
