Greenville, Tenn. - Lewis outscored Tusculum 5-2 in the fourth quarter to comeback and win, 13-11, in intercollegiate women's lacrosse action Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
With the win, the Flyers improved to 5-3 while the Pioneers moved to 4-5
IMPACT PLAYERS
Eliana Cappelllini paced Lewis with four goals and a team-high five points with
Jade McKinnon (Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) adding in a hat trick of her own and game-high seven draw controls. McKinnon and Daneilla Winterlik each caused two turnovers with Winterlik, Cappellini and
Emilie Lewis (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J Andrew High School) each collecting three ground balls.
Sophia Fountain (Berkeley, Ill./Montini Catholic High School) made nine saves in the win.
Laura Nance Pickens and Nilsson Carmella each had three goals in the loss while Emery Dove was charged with the loss for Tusculum, making six saves in 25:37 of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tied 2-2 midway through the first quarter, the Flyers broke the deadlock as McKinnon scored back-to-back goals to push Lewis ahead, 4-2, with 5:04 in the first. The hosts flipped the script in the second stanza as they rattled off four of the next five goals to turn a 4-2 deficit into a slim 6-5 lead with 3:45 to play. Still, Cappellini found the back of the net off a pass from
Amelia Procyk (Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) to send both sides into halftime tied, 6-6.
Out of the break, both sides traded scored but a Pioneers goals with 4:34 from Pickens put the hosts in the lead again, 9-8.
Down one in the fourth, it was all Flyers as they tallied three of the first four goals of the frame to cling to a slim 11-10 advantage with 4:38 to play. The hosts had an answer as Nilsson found twine with 1:16 to play and tied the contest. The Flyers had one last surge in them as with 58 seconds left,
Ravyn Jimenez (Navarre, Fla./Navarre High School) slid past a Pioneers defender and buried the ball into the back of the net and gave Lewis the lead for good, 12-11. Jimenez added one more goal with 39 seconds left to secure the 13-11 road win for Lewis.
