ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Lewis University softball team split a doubleheader with Grand Valley State Wednesday (March 25) at the GVSU Softball Field. The Flyers lost the first game 3-1, but came back to win the second game 6-5. Lewis moves to 13-11 on the season, while Grand Valley is now 11-13.
GAME 1: Grand Valley 3, Lewis 1
The Lakers scored first, scoring a run in the bottom of the first on a ground out. They added to the lead in the bottom of the third as a single made it 2-0.
Lewis got on the board in the top of the fourth inning as
Ariana Trausch (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove High School) singled up the middle, scoring
Morgan Spodarek (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) to make it 2-1. Grand Valley answered in the bottom half of the inning on a homer from Kylee Hoebeke to make it 3-1.
The Lakers loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning looking for more insurance, but the Flyers were able to get out of the jam with a groundout. Lewis opened the top of the seventh with a single and a walk, but a double play halted the threat. However, a walk and a single loaded the bases, but a foul out ended the game.
Chloe Kohnhorst (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) went 3-for-3 to lead the Flyer offense, while
Nicole Magdziasz (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) added a pair of hits. Karli Dorr (4-2) earned the win for the Lakers, allowing six hits and an earned run over seven innings.
Jolee Strohmeyer (Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque Senior) (6-7) suffered the loss, allowing eight hits and three earned runs over six innings.
GAME 2: Lewis 6, Grand Valley 5
The Flyers scored first as an
Anna Frafjord (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton High School) homer in the top of the second made it 1-0. They weren't done though as a triple from Trausch scored Spodarek to make it 2-0. The Lakers scored twice in the bottom of the second to make it 2-2.
Lewis regained the lead in the fourth inning as a
Teagan Berkshire (/Lincoln-Way Central) triple scored Trausch and a Magdziasz single scored Berkshire to make it 4-2. Grand Valley came back with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.
Trausch evened the score in the top of the sixth with a solo home run. Magdziasz then gave Lewis a 6-5 lead on a sacrifice fly, which scored
Ava Reed (Lemont, Ill./Lemont High School). The Lakers got two runners on in the sixth and another in the seventh, but were unable to tie the game.
Avery Flynn (Fruitport, Mich./Spring Lake) (4-1) picked up the win for the Flyers, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs over seven innings. Nevaeh Ingram (1-6) took the loss, giving up six hits and four earned runs in five innings. Trausch went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored, finishing with seven total bases. Berkshire also went 2-for-2, while
Katie Jensen (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) added a pair of hits.
