Baseball Demolishes No. 24 Missouri S&T to End Weekend

Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University baseball team emerged victorious against #24 Missouri S&T with a final score of 18-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The visitors' Drew Baugus scored the first run of the game at the top of the first inning.

The Flyers were quick to bounce back, as they scored four runs at the bottom of the inning. Constantine Coines (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) got things started for the Flyers, who reached home plate after being positioned at second base. With Chris Daugherty (Chicago, Ill/Brother Rice) on first base, and Jimmy Spellman (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame College of Prep) on second, Alex Chaltin (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) sent it out of the ballpark with a home run that put the Flyers up 4-1.

Although Missouri put up two runs at the top of the third, closing the gap on the scoreboard, Lewis didn't hesitate in having another inning with multiple runs, this time scoring three runs at the bottom of the fourth. With bases loaded, Spellman doubled to center field, clearing the bases and giving Lewis a four run cushion.

The best inning was yet to come for the Flyers, as they had a six-run fifth inning that saw Tylor Phommachanhom (Plainfield, Ill/Parkland CC) score on a wild pitch, while Clemens and Peterson got their second run of the game each. With Spellman on first base, and Coines on third, Daugherty got the Flyers' second home run of the day, increasing the lead to 13-4.

With no intentions of slowing down, the Flyers still had another high scoring inning as John Henry Russell (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) was responsible for scoring the first run of the sixth inning, after having advanced to third base on the previous play. The Flyers had the bases loaded, this time with Clemens on first after a walk, Peterson on second and Phommachanhom on third. Coines closed out the scoring for the Flyers by sending the ball over the center field wall for a grand slam that put the Flyers up 18-4. After the visitors failed to bring down Lewis' lead, the game was called at the top of the seventh.
