Back on Top! Men's Lacrosse Crowned GLVC Champions

Romeoville, Ill. - For the second time in program history, the top-seeded Lewis University men's lacrosse team captured the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship as they defeated #2 seed Maryville, 16-10, Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium.

With the win, the Flyers improved to 13-3 while the Saints shifted to 11-4. Today marked the third consecutive year that Lewis and Maryville faced-off in the final. It also is the Flyers second championship in three years with the first coming in the 2024 campaign.

IMPACT PLAYERS
Malikye Good (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic HS) led all scorers with six goals and seven points with Carter Korzenski (Orchard Park, N.Y./Limestone) tallying four goals of his own. On the defensive side of the ball, Tyler Davis (Edina, Minnesota/Edina HS) and Joe Janda (Livonia, Michigan/St. Mary's Preparatory HS) combined for 12 ground balls with seven for Davis and five for Janda. Davis also caused five turnovers in the win. Between the pipes, Caden Donahue (Hugo, Minnesota/Mahtomedi HS) made 14 saves in the win.

Trent Zimay accounted for four goals for the Saints while Evan Alfano made 12 saves in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Tied 2-2 late in the first quarter, the Flyers took the lead for good as Kohl Wesner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) collected a ball from Josh Schelfe (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) that he slotted into the back of the net with less than a minute remaining to make it a 3-2 contest.

Lewis doubled its lead to open the second as Good tallied his first of the day to make it a 4-2 contest. After a Maryville goal at the 14:19 mark, it was all Flyers to close the half as a Paul Ruskoski (Tulsa, Oklahoma/Bishop Kelley HS) goal spurned an uninterrupted 5-0 run that propelled Lewis ahead, 9-3. Still, two late goals from the Saints sent both sides into the locker room with the score at 9-5.

Out of the break, neither side was able to pull away as both teams combined for eight goals with four from each side. A Fritz Whalen (Buford, Georgia/Buford High School) marker at the 30 second mark however let Lewis enter the fourth quarter still ahead by four, 13-9.

Lewis put the game away for good in the final stanza as consecutive man-up goals from Good and Korzenski pushed Lewis ahead six, 15-9, with 6:37 to play. Both sides found the twine one more time before the whistle with Lewis never relinquishing their lead and clinching their second GLVC Title in three years .
