Women's Volleyball Posts Consecutive 3-0 Wins on Day Two of D'Youville Tournament

Buffalo, N.Y. – The Lewis University women's volleyball team swept both Lock Haven and Kutztown on the final day of the D'Youville Tournament Saturday afternoon in the Saints Center.

The Flyers finished the tournament 4-0, marking the first time since the 2021 campaign that Lewis did not drop a match during the first weekend of the regular season.

HOW IT HAPPENED (VS. LOCK HAVEN)
Tied 7-7 early in the first set, the Flyers took the lead for good as a Lock Haven attack error spurred a weekend-best 10-1 run that vaulted Lewis ahead, 17-8. The red and white kept the Bald Eagles at bay for most of the set, and despite a late 5-1 spurt that trimmed the Lewis lead to just three, 23-20, the Flyers used an attack error from their foe and a Hadley Rogge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) kill to snag the first frame, 25-21.

Down 8-7 to begin the second set, Lewis was once again cleared for takeoff as another Rogge kill sparked a 9-2 run that propelled Lewis ahead, 16-10. The Flyers never relinquished their lead as they used a late 4-0 spurt while also limiting the Bald Eagles to a -.024 (9-10-42) hitting percentage to claim the 25-16 set-two win and move to within one of winning the match.

Lewis sealed the sweep in the third frame as it hit at a match-best clip of .353 (17-5-34) to down Lock Haven, 25-21, and claim the 3-0 victory.

Rogge led Lewis in kills with 10, while Grace Malek (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) provided 19 assists. Kynzie Lilly (Richmond, Texas/Southwest Baptist) had 18 digs, with Sarah Newberry (Fairfield, Ohio/Stephen T Badin) continuing her strong start to the season at the net with seven total blocks (seven assists). As a team, the Flyers posted a hitting percentage of .215 (38-15-107) compared to .071 (34-25-126) for Lock Haven.

Gracelynn Wolzen led Lock Haven in kills with nine, while Natalie Gibson provided a match-best 27 assists. Olivia Taylor had 19 digs in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED (VS. KUTZTOWN)
Down 9-8 in the first frame after an attack error, Lewis retook the lead for good with an uninterrupted 6-0 run, paced by three kills from Newberry, to jump ahead, 14-9. Despite a 6-2 run from Kutztown that trimmed Lewis' advantage to one, 16-15, a timely 5-2 run, paced by kills from Marin Grossman (Hortonville, Wis./Hortonville) and Rogge, gave Lewis breathing room, 21-17. Lewis notched four of the final six points of the set to win, 25-19, and open a 1-0 match lead.

It was all Flyers in the second set as the red and white hit at a weekend-best clip of .517 (15-0-29) and had no errors to win, 25-15, and move to within one of sweeping their second consecutive match.

In the final stanza of action, Kutztown struck first as it scored 10 of the first 11 points of the set. Still, the Flyers had an answer as they embarked on a 6-1 run, led by three kills from Grossman, before using a 7-2 run later in the set, this time paced by a pair of Buxton kills, to stun the Golden Bears and take their first lead of the final frame, 14-13.

Both sides jockeyed for the lead throughout the middle of the frame, with Kutztown nearly avoiding the sweep as a Madilyn Bogovic kill pushed the Golden Bears to within one of taking set three, 24-23. However, the Flyers found an answer as back-to-back kills from Rogge and Hannah Dietzenbach (Fall River, Wis./Fall River) let Lewis retake the lead, 25-24. The Flyers sealed the sweep on the ensuing point as a Kutztown attack error let Lewis claim the frame, 26-24, and complete its 4-0 weekend.

Grossman led Lewis in kills with 12, with her teammates Malek (17) and Rachel Kaczorowski (Carpentersville, Ill./Harry D. Jacobs) (15) combining for 32 assists in the win. Lilly tallied 17 digs, marking the fourth consecutive match the Richmond, Texas, native had 10 or more digs. At the service line, Lilly and Lauren Buxton (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) combined for eight of Lewis' 12 aces in the match. The Flyers posted a hitting percentage of .282 (43-14-103), while Kutztown hit at a clip of .242 (37-14-95).

Bogovic led the Golden Bears in kills with 12, while Emma Baldridge notched 16 assists. Saige Thibodeaux ended the contest with a team-best 13 digs.
