KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Lewis women's volleyball team ended September on a high note, sweeping Truman State in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Saturday afternoon at Pershing Arena.
The Flyers improved to 10-5 (4-0 GLVC) with the win, while the Bulldogs dipped to 6-8 (2-2 GLVC).
IMPACT PLAYERS
Caroline Impey (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) led the Flyers in kills with 12, while
Grace Malek (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) dished out 18 assists. At the service line,
Kynzie Lilly (Richmond, Texas/Southwest Baptist) notched four aces in the win. On the defensive side of the ball,
Elena Gubera (Jamestown, Ind./Western Boone) notched 18 digs, while
Ann Kelly Velikov (Orvault, France/C.E.N.S.) led the Flyers with three total blocks, including two solo blocks. As a team, the Flyers posted a hitting percentage of .266 (42-13-109), compared to the Bulldogs, who hit .122 (31-17-115).
Laci Neece paced the Bulldogs with 12 kills while Tori Creason tallied 29 assists. Addy Janssen notched a team-best 10 digs in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis raced out of the gate, rattling off seven of the first 10 points of the match, with Lilly tallying three aces during that span. Still, the Bulldogs slowly chipped away at the Flyers' lead, trimming it to one, 14-13, after an Autumn Erickson kill. However, the Flyers weathered the storm as a
Lauren Buxton (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) kill sparked a 5-2 spurt to propel the Red and White ahead, 19-15. The Flyers kept the Bulldogs at bay for the rest of the set and tallied the final four points of the frame to take the 25-19 set-one win and open a 1-0 match lead.
Lewis was again cleared for takeoff early to begin the second set as the Flyers tallied eight of the first 10 points of the frame, with a service ace from
Rachel Kaczorowski (Carpentersville, Ill./Harry D. Jacobs) capping the early push. Lewis kept Truman State at bay for the remainder of the frame, as a 5-1 run midway through the set helped the Flyers take down the Bulldogs, 25-17, and moved to within one set of completing the sweep.
The Flyers sealed the sweep in the third set, posting a match-best hitting percentage of .457 (18-2-35) to fly past the Bulldogs, 25-17, and secure the three-set win.
MATCH NOTES
- Lilly has now recorded four-plus aces in four matches this year.
- Lewis is now 16-5 against Truman State all-time.
- The Flyers earned their fourth sweep of the year and first since Sept. 4 against then No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul.
- Gubera has recorded 15 or more digs in five consecutive matches.
