Box Score

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--A solid performance from freshman middle blocker Jenna Sayers wasn't enough to help the Lewis University women's volleyball team overcome Northern Kentucky Saturday afternoon.

The 6-3 Sayers posted a season-best 15 kills and six blocks, but Lewis (10-7, 3-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference) fell 26-30, 30-17, 22-30, 26-30 to the Norse (10-7, 3-3 GLVC).

Game 1 seesawed back and forth for two-thirds of the game. Northern Kentucky held an 18-17 lead before opening a four-point advantage at 23-19. Both teams had been adept at earning side outs, but NKU broke through and was able to claim several transition points and stake a small lead that would stand.

Trailing 9-7 in game 2, Lewis stormed its way to nine of the next 10 points to claim a 16-10 lead. Sayers had a pair of blocks and a kill in the run, and Lewis benefited from three Norse hitting errors. The Flyers eventually extended their margin to 13 in the blowout win.

Game 3 was closer than the final score indicated as Lewis was within a point at 20-19, but NKU powered its way to a 10-2 run to close out the game. The streak was sparked by NKU's Liz Holmes' defense at the net. Holmes had three block assists and a block solo during the run that helped clinch the game.

Lewis put itself in a similar position in game 4, within a point late, but was unable to tie or claim a lead. The Flyers trailed 27-26 before NKU scored the match's final three points.

Flyer sophomore Theresa Nugent had 12 kills, four blocks and five digs, while Melissa Dobry had seven kills and seven digs.

NKU was led by All-American Kristin Koralewski's 26 kills, 14 digs and .458 hitting percentage. Holmes added 15 kills, 10 digs and six blocks, while Lynne Fischesser had 12 kills and 11 digs.
