EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - With 4:27 remaining, sophomore Darcee Schmidt broke a 53-all tie with seven straight points to lead the Lewis University women's basketball team to a come-from-behind victory in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener.

Lewis (2-2, 1-0 GLVC) shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and limited the Cougars to just 18.5 percent (5 of 27) to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit. The Flyers ended the game on a 12-2 run over the final 4:27.

Trailing 39-26 at halftime, the Flyers embarked on a 15-4 run that trimmed the SIUE lead to 43-41 with 12:42 to play. However, Lewis' comeback would stall over the next eight minutes as SIUE (1-3, 0-1 GLVC) re-built its lead to eight points.

Sophomore Mary Moskal completed the Flyer comeback with a fast break layup that tied the game for the first time since the 12:52 mark of the first half. From there, Schmidt's scoring outburst helped pushed the team to its win.

Schmidt finished the game with a game-high 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. She shot 5 of 14 from the field and was 5 of 7 from the free-throw line.

Junior Shante Glenn provided some punch off the bench as she tallied 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Sophomore Erin Cox (9 points, 7 rebounds) and Senior Tenesha McDaniel (8 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists) also contributed for the Flyers.

Turnovers had been Lewis' nemesis in its first three games of the year. The Flyers averaged 25 turnovers in their first three games, but committed just 10 miscues against the Cougars.

Lewis's next game is on the road against defending GLVC champion Quincy. Game time against the Hawks is 1 p.m. Nov. 28.
