The Lewis University swimming teams set three school records and produced their first NCAA qualifying time while swimming at the Bulldog Invitational at Truman State Nov. 5-6.
Sophomore Michael Lapustin had two of the Flyers' best swims of the meet in the backstroke, his specialty. He won the 100 back in an NCAA B-cut time of 52.63 and beat his nearest competitor by .72 seconds. He also established a new school standard in the 200 backstroke as he clocked a 1:55.58, smashing the old record of 1:56.77. He finished second in the event and was just .34 seconds from an NCAA B-cut. He added a third top-five with a 1:58.75, just .6 seconds off the school record, in the 200 individual medley.
For the second straight week, junior Adam Bidlack cracked the school record book, as he tallied record-breaking marks in the 500 and 1650 freestyles. He set the Lewis pool record in the 500 free last weekend and followed that performance by breaking the school record by more than two seconds. His 4:49.38 was good for third place at the meet. In addition, he broke the two-year-old 1650 free school record by 8.5 seconds; He swam a 17:10.98 to place fourth in the event.
The Flyer women placed fifth at the five-team invitational, while the men placed fourth. The women registered 245.50 points to place behind Truman State (1,497.50), Nebraska-Omaha (686), Indianapolis (602.50) and Northern Iowa (256.50). The men recorded 433 points and finished behind Missouri-Rolla (988.50), Truman State (968.50) and Indianapolis (585).
Lewis' women earned two top-five finishes in the highly competitive meet, while the men's team had 15 top-five finishes.
The women's 200 medley relay team consisting of Leigh Dodd, Stephanie White-Olson, Michelle Sliva and Brittany Reetz swam a 1:54.90 and placed fourth. Meanwhile, the 400 medley relay squad (Dodd, White-Olson, Tristine Schmidt, Reetz) finished fifth in 4:12.27. Dodd claimed the top individual finish for the Flyer women as she placed sixth in the 100 backstroke.
The five men's relays earned three third-place finishes and a pair of fourths. The 200 freestyle relay (Lapustin, Josh Rogers, Alex Pepke, Kurt Niemeier; 1:28.07) and the 200 and 400 medley relays (Lapustin, Dave Borowski, Jevgenijs Pesins, Rogers) each garnered third place; the 200 medley relay swam a 1:39.73, while the 400 medley relay timed in at 3:40.57. Meanwhile, the 800 freestyle relay (Niemeier, Rogers, Brown, Bidlack; 7:22.25) and the 400 freestyle relay (Rogers, Bidlack, Pesins, Lapustin; 3:13.17) both finished fourth.
Individually for the men, Rogers (2nd, 100 free, 48.01; 5th, 50 free, 22.21), Pesins (3rd, 100 fly, 53.41) and Brown (3rd, 200 fly, 2:01.82; 5th, 1650 free, 17:14.13) all registered top five performances.
