Men's Basketball Overpowers Illinois-Springfield 84-65

ROMEOVILLE - The Lewis University men's basketball team returned to the win column in style Monday night, as four players scored in double figures to lead the Flyers to an 84-65 non-conference victory over Illinois-Springfield.

The win snapped Lewis' four-game losing streak and improved the Flyers to 3-4, while UIS, a member of the NAIA American Midwest Conference, fell to 2-10 with its ninth consecutive defeat.

The Flyers shot a blistering 78 percent (21 of 27), including a 7-of-9 performance from 3-point range, to build a commanding 52-26 halftime advantage.

John Loeffelholz was 5 of 5 from the floor and 3 of 3 at the foul line for 13 points, Anthony Scala sank all four of his 3-point attempts for 12 points and Randy Wright was 5 of 6, including a trey, for 11 points in the first half.

The game was tied five times in the early going before Scala heated up.

The senior guard gave Lewis the lead for good, 14-11, with his first 3-pointer at the 14:58 mark, then followed with another trey on the next possession to trigger a 12-0 run that made it 26-13 with 8:24 left. The Lewis lead dipped below 13 points just once more.

The Flyers cooled a bit in the second half but still shot 59 percent to finish the game at 69 percent. Lewis was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc in the second half and finished at 71 percent (10 of 14).

Coach Kyle Green's team established season highs in points, field goals (34), field-goal percentage, 3-point field goals, 3-point field-goal percentage, assists (24) and blocked shots (3).

Wright topped the Flyer scoring chart with 18 points and added 5 assists and a season-high 3 steals. The senior guard has 18 assists in his last 3 games.

Scala finished with 16 points and tied his season best of 3 steals, while Loeffelholz equaled his season high of 15 points. DeAndre Williams collected 9 points and 5 assists.

Off the bench, Dustin Warfield tallied a season-high 11 points and added 4 rebounds, and Pat Monaghan had 5 rebounds and a season-high 4 assists.

Illinois-Springfield got 20 points from Michael Griffin, 15 points, 9 assists and 5 steals from Antonio Puckett, and 11 points and 6 rebounds from Che Jordan.

The Flyers return to Great Lakes Valley Conference action Thursday at Northern Kentucky.
