NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
Another strong outing by goalkeeper Jordan Gustman (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) and Tito Lara (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Central)'s first goal as a Flyer gave the 10th-ranked Lewis University men's soccer team a 1-1 tie with Franklin Pierce Saturday on day two of Southern Connecticut State University's Reebok/Howard Johnson Hotel Autumn Classic.
The Flyers (0-0-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead at 23:31 as Lara, the former Joliet Township standout, took a cross from Cathal Brady (Dublin, Ireland/St. Peters College Dunboyne) and headed the ball past Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Joseph Luginsland.
Lars Bakker scored the game-tying goal for Franklin Pierce (0-1-1) on a penalty kick at 64:07.
Gustman, who stopped nine shots in Friday's 1-1 deadlock against Southern Connecticut State, made five saves while Luginsland turned away three Lewis shots on goal.
The Flyers play important Central Region games at Truman State and Rockhurst Saturday and Sunday.
