ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Lewis scored three second-half goals and played dominating defense Sunday to earn a 3-0 win over Missouri-St. Louis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinal game.
The Flyers (10-5-2), seeded third in the seven-team tournament, advance to play No. 2-seed Southern Indiana in Friday's 5 p.m. semifinal at Southern Illinois Edwardsville. Southern Indiana defeated Bellarmine 2-1 in another Sunday quarterfinal.
No. 1 seed SIU Edwardsville, which received a quarterfinal bye, will host No. 5 Quincy Friday at 7:30 p.m. Quincy blanked No. 4 Wisconsin-Parkside 3-0 Sunday.
Lewis fired 14 first-half shots, including four on UMSL goalkeeper Campbell McLaurin, but had to settle for a scoreless tie at halftime. The Rivermen (6-13-1) managed just one shot in the opening frame.
Cathal Brady (Dublin, Ireland/St. Peters College Dunboyne)'s team-leading 10th goal of the year at 56:20 (Justin Sanabria (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) assist) gave Lewis the only scoring it needed. Alejandro Blinder (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto French)'s fourth goal of the season (unassisted) at 74:31 made it 2-0, and Tito Lara (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Central)'s sixth marker of the year (Ron Chiero (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant)) at 86:16 concluded the scoring.
The Flyers' 30-7 advantage in shots included a 12-4 edge in shots on goal. McLaurin made eight saves for the Rivermen, while Lewis netminder Jordan Gustman (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) recorded his fifth shutout of the season.
With the win, Lewis reached double figures in victories for a 12th consecutive season under head coach Evan Fiffles. The Flyers, who are aiming for the program's seventh GLVC title, have won eight of their last nine outings.
