KENOSHA, Wis. -
Wisconsin-Parkside's Sammy Kromm scored a layup with 22 seconds remaining that pushed the Rangers to a 55-51 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Lewis University.
Kromm's basket followed a 3-pointer by Lewis' Shante Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Lourdes) that tied the game at 51-all with 40 seconds left. Lewis (2-3, 0-1 GLVC) had the lead for most of the second half, but a late UWP run coupled with an untimely Flyer turnover won the game for Parkside (3-2, 1-0 GLVC).
The game was tied or Lewis held a lead from 19:06 of the second half until 2:24 when Michelle Pickering hit two free throws for a 48-46 UWP lead. The Flyers fell behind by five with just over a minute to play when Carrie Schieve connected on a 3-pointer. Schieve was just 1-of-11 from beyond the arc, but her lone make was a big basket.
The Flyers were able to respond with two free throws by Darcee Schmidt (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) and Glenn's 3-pointer, but a turnover with 10 seconds to play and a chance to tie clinched the game for the Rangers.
Bryanne Callahan (Seneca, Ill./Seneca) paced the Flyers with 12 points, including nine in the second half. Schmidt scored 11 points and was 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
Despite missing most of the first half due to foul trouble, Kromm netted 18 points and five rebounds and was 8-of-9 from the field for UWP.
Lewis' next game is Monday, December 1 when it travels to Saint Joseph's for a 5 p.m. game.
