Barreto Carries Lewis Past UC San Diego

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Fabiano Barreto tallied 18 kills and Greg Pochopien recorded a career-high 11 blocks as the Lewis University men's volleyball team defeated UC San Diego 3-1. The No. 13 Flyers (5-5) utilized their best blocking effort of the season to stymie the Tritons (4-5) 30-27, 22-30, 30-23, 30-27. Lewis outblocked UC San Diego 17.5-10.5.

Defense was the order of the day as neither team's offenses had particularly strong outings. UCSD hit .216 while Lewis connected at a .180 clip. UCSD posted 50 digs in the four-game match and had two players with at least 10 digs. For the second straight match, Ryan Stuntz led Lewis with a team-high 15 digs.

Barreto served as the Flyers' primary option all evening as his match-high 18 kills doubled his closest teammates output. Junior Jeff Soler and freshman Jared Dayton both recorded nine kills. Dayton added a career-best seven blocks in the victory.

Sophomore setter Brandon Sisk handed out 41 assists and had six digs and five kills.

The Flyers, participating in the Penn State Tournament, have not lost in University Park in the last three years. They will look to keep that streak alive when they play USC at 4 p.m. Saturday, February 7.
