ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University softball team earned a doubleheader split with No. 15 Grand Valley State, including a victory over three-time All-America pitcher Jennifer Mackson.
Lewis junior Kristen Porzel (2-0) delivered a victory in the opener with a win over Mackson (7-1). Mackson entered the game undefeated with five shutouts, but Porzel outdueled her for the 3-2 victory. Porzel went five innings allowing two hits and struck out three. The only two hits she allowed were solo homeruns. Carrie Paradzinski pitched the final two innings to record her second save of the season.
Grand Valley (13-2) got on the board in the first with a homerun by Sarah Paape. Lewis (10-6) answered in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs. Amy Yusko led off with a single to start the Flyer rally. Yusko advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and later scored on a two-out single by Robin Martz. The Flyers second run of the inning came home following an error by Paape.
The Flyers scored the eventual winning run on an RBI fielder's choice by Yusko.
Game 2 saw Grand Valley score a run in the first and sixth innings that led the Lakers to a 2-1 victory. Jen Goldschmeding had an RBI single in the first and Stacie DelChiaro hit a solo home run in the sixth that amounted to the Lakers' scoring.
Lewis scored a run in the seventh and had the winning run on second base with two outs before Mackson closed the door and earned her first save of the season. Kristin Jenner picked up the win, allowing just one hit in six innings of work.
Lewis will take to the road this weekend as it travels to Findlay, Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine.
