ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--The Lewis University softball team utilized a pair of strong pitching performances, a clutch base hit and a barrage of hits to sweep a doubleheader from Saint Joseph's.
Senior Mary Jaszczak retired the side in order six times and surrendered just three hits in a nine-inning, complete-game shutout in game 1. Jaszczak (5-3) struck out four and had just one walk, which was intentional. She had not walked a batter in 20 2/3 innings until the intentional walk in the seventh inning.
The Flyers (19-9) earned the 1-0 win in the opener with a one-out single by freshman Kristy Vanek in the bottom of the ninth inning. Kalynn Russell led off the inning reaching base on a hit-by-pitch. Beth Shelus pinch ran for Russell and advanced to second following a sacrifice bunt. Shelus scored the winning run from second base relatively easily after Vanek's single up the middle reached the outfield.
Lewis cracked the scoreboard early in game 2 with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. A pair of two-out walks proved costly to Saint Joseph's (5-19). Amy Yusko and Amy Roberts both reached on free passes and then Crystal Bowen loaded the bases with an infield single. Vanek then laced a single to left field that went underneath the left fielder's legs, allowing Roberts and Bowen to score in addition to Yusko.
Yusko recorded her first career home run with a solo shot in the third inning that cleared the left field fence. Robin Martz had an RBI double in the fourth inning that provided some cushion as well
Carrie Paradzinski (8-5) picked up the win going the distance. She recorded three strikeouts and scattered five hits in seven innings of work.
Lewis returns to action Thursday, April 1 when it hosts Robert Morris College-Springfield in a doubleheader. Game 1 is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
