ROMEOVILLE - Northern Kentucky scored eight unearned runs, including six in the seventh inning, and defeated Lewis 8-7 Saturday in game two of a Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader.

In the 7-inning opener, NKU snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth and held on for a 5-2 win.

Lewis (13-28, 7-18 GLVC) scored four runs in the fourth inning of the nightcap, all with two outs, to grab a 5-1 lead.

Ahren Baranski doubled and scored on Mike Smith (Lemont, Ill./Lemont)'s single. Smith moved to third on Matt Newquist (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley)'s single and scored on Matt Flavin (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice)'s single.

After Flavin and Newquist moved up on a wild pitch, Andy Radak (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville)'s single scored Newquist. Flavin also scored on the play when the NKU center fielder mishandled the ball.

NKU (22-18, 15-11 GLVC) followed its six-run seventh with a run in the eighth to make it 8-5. Baranski delivered a 2-out RBI single in the eighth, and the Flyers added another run in the ninth but stranded the tying run at second.

Lewis freshman right-hander Greg Moss (2-5) allowed just five hits and struck out four in 6 2/3 innings. Baranski had three hits and Newquist had two as Lewis outhit NKU 10-7.

In game one, the Flyers plated two runs in the third to gain a 2-2 tie. Andy Sweet had an RBI single, and Darryl Jenkins swiped home on a double steal for the second run.

Sophomore left-hander Justin Barr (0-3) allowed four earned runs and just five hits in six innings.

Lewis and NKU play another twinbill Sunday starting at noon.
