Lewis University was defeated 16-5 and 7-6 by Saint Joseph's Wednesday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader.
The losses dropped the Flyers' records to 16-35 overall and 10-25 in the GLVC. Saint Joseph's improved to 23-25, 17-17.
In the 7-inning opener, Saint Joseph's led 7-0 before Lewis scored an unearned run in the fourth. The Pumas answered that tally in the bottom of the fourth, then put the game away by scoring eight runs in the fifth.
The Flyers scored two runs in the sixth, the second on a Chris Carbonaro single that scored Ahren Baranski, who had doubled. Lewis plated its final two runs in the seventh on an error by the SJC second baseman.
Andy Sweet collected three of the Flyers' 10 hits.
Lewis took a 3-0 in the first inning of game two. Brian Davis led off with a single, stole second and scored on Darryl Jenkins (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield)' single. Jenkins went to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on a wild pitch, and Matt Newquist (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley)'s two-out single drove home the third run.
SJC scored single runs in the first and fourth before taking a 5-3 lead with a 3-run fifth. The Pumas made it 7-3 in the seventh.
The Flyers fought back with three runs in the eighth. Baranski led off with a double and scored on Newquist's one-out single, and Chris Carbonaro followed with a 2-run home run, his fourth of the season.
In the ninth, Lewis had the tying run on with two outs following Victor Naut (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick)'s single but could not score.
The Flyers outhit the Pumas 12-10. Davis had three hits, while Sweet and Newquist had two hits apiece.
Lewis concludes the season Saturday and Sunday with a pair of doubleheaders at Quincy. Game times are 4 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.
