LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
Pitching rose to the top in Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader between Lewis and Bellarmine.
Unfortunately for Lewis, Bellarmine's pitching was just a bit better in the Knights' 3-2, 4-2 doubleheader sweep that dropped the Flyers to 9-19 overall and 3-10 in the GLVC.
A 3-run third inning was enough for Bellarmine (13-16, 9-7 GLVC) to win the 7-inning opener. The Flyers responded with two runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Ahren Baranski and an RBI single by Phil Marchinski, but that concluded the scoring.
Matt Petrusek (3-5) allowed five hits and three walks and struck out nine. Chris Carbonaro was 2-for-3, and Brian Davis had a double.
Lewis managed nine hits and five walks off Chad Cahoe in game two, but the Bellarmine pitcher offset that by striking out 13 and stranding 12 Flyer baserunners.
The Flyers led 1-0 after three innings and 2-1 after seven. The Knights reached Lewis reliever Matt Rolle (1-1) for three runs in the eighth, however, and held on for the sweep.
Davis and Carbonaro drove in the Lewis runs, and Darryl Jenkins and Mike Smith tallied two hits apiece.
Flyer starter Greg Moss allowed seven hits and two walks while fanning six in seven innings.
The teams play another twinbill Sunday at noon EDT.
