Flyers Derailed by Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio-- - The Ohio State Buckeyes ended a six-match conference winning streak for the Lewis University men's volleyball team with a 3-0 defeat.

Lewis (15-12, 10-4 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) fell 28-30, 32-34, 21-30 to the host Buckeyes.

14th-ranked Ohio State (17-8, 10-3 MIVA) rallied back from 27-24 and 25-21 deficits in the first two games to defeat the 11th-ranked Flyers. OSU's Mike Wauligman scored a match-high 17.5 points for the Buckeyes, recording 14 kills, seven digs, a solo block and five assist blocks while hitting a career-high .650 (14-1-20). Ohio State's Mark Greaves added 16.5 points with 15 kills, an ace serve and an assist block. Flyer Fabiano Barreto scored a team-high 16.5 points for Lewis with 15 kills, a solo block and an assist block. Jeff Soler contributed 14 points with 12 kills, an ace serve and two assist blocks.

Game one had 10 ties early to reach a 13-all tie. Flyer kills by Barreto and Jeff Soler gave Lewis a 15-13 lead. The Flyers expanded the lead to three several times. With Lewis leading 23-20, a kill by Greaves, a Flyer error and a Buckeye block by Mark Peckham and Scott Spurlock tied the game at 23. Lewis quickly took the lead back to three at 26-23 with kills by Barreto and Jared Dayton and a solo block by Enrique Escalante. A Flyer service error and a kill by Soler moved the score to 27-24. Back-to-back kills by Wauligman cut the lead to 27-26. A Lewis hitting error tied the game at 27. Ohio State took a 28-27 lead with a block by Adam Pedersen and Wauligman. Another Flyer error made it 29-27, Buckeyes. Barreto's kill cut the lead to 29-28 but a Flyer hitting error ended the game with Ohio State winning 30-28. The Buckeyes hit .355 for the game to .275 for the Flyers.

Tied at four in game two, Lewis with a Barreto kill and a solo block by Greg Pochopien took a 6-4 lead. The Flyers expanded the lead to four at several times, the last at 25-21. Ohio State tied the game at 25 with a four-point run. A Wauligman kill opened the run. Buckeye blocks by Pedersen and Wauligman and Pedersen and Andy Cole and a Flyer error tied the game at 25. At 27-all, a block by Spurlock and Cole and a Greaves kill gave the Buckeyes a 29-27 lead, serving game point. An Escalante kill and a solo block by Jared Dayton tied the game at 29. A Lewis error gave OSU a 30-29 lead and its third game point. Barreto tied the game at 30 with a kill. A Spurlock kill made it 31-30 and OSU's fourth game point. Barreto again responded with a kill to tie the game at 31. A Flyer service error put OSU ahead, 32-31 with its fifth game point. For the third consecutive time, Barreto responded with a kill to tie the game at 32. A kill by Wauligman put the Buckeyes ahead, 33-32, and with its sixth game point, won the game, 34-32 with a block by Pedersen and Wauligman. Ohio State hit .366 for the game to .214 for Lewis.

Game three saw Ohio State build a 9-2 lead and coast to victory in the deciding game. Ohio State hit .520 for the game to .125 for the Flyers.

For the match, Ohio State hit .402 to .211 for Lewis. Each team had 53 kills in the match while Lewis had a 2-1 margin in ace serves.
