EVANSVILLE, Ind.--The Lewis University women's volleyball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 1-3 loss against Southern Indiana.
The Screaming Eagles (7-4, 1-0 GLVC), who have played in the GLVC Tournament Championship match the past two years, bested Lewis (7-4, 0-1 GLVC) 30-27, 28-30, 30-23, 34-32.
The Flyers' Theresa Nugent (Oak Lawn, Ill./Queen of Peace) and Sarah McKinney (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) were the only Lewis players to record at least 10 kills; Nugent tallied a team-best 13 kills, while McKinney added 10.
The team struggled offensively, hitting just .141 for the match. Rory Harrison (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and Val Olis (Valparaiso, Ind./Boone Grove) were the team's most potent offensive weapons as both players posted eight kills and they hit .438 and .333, respectively.
Defensively, McKinney had a career-high 22 digs and freshman setter Andrea Morrone (Palos Park, Ill./Stagg) dug 20 balls. Nugent led the team with five blocks.
Lewis will be in action Saturday when it travels to SIU Edwardsville for a 2 p.m. match.
