Volleyball Stays Perfect in MIVA

ERIE, Pa.--Senior Jeff Soler recorded a match-high 21 kills to help the Lewis University men's volleyball team past a surprisingly strong Mercyhurst squad.

The Flyers (4-3, 3-0 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) remained perfect in conference play with a 30-22, 25-30, 30-22, 31-29 victory over the host Lakers (4-1, 3-1 MIVA).

Mercyhurst beat the Flyers in all of the major statistical categories, but Lewis came up with the win. The Lakers held edges in hitting percentage (.417-.387), kills (66-57), digs (49-19) and blocks (12-9).

However, strong individual efforts lifted Lewis to its fourth straight win. Soler hit .462 and had three digs, while sophomore Jared Dayton chipped in with 12 kills. Junior middle blocker Enrique Escalante added 10 kills, and freshman middle blocker David Kyner had a team-high four blocks.

The Flyers return home to host the Lewis Invitational Feb. 4-5. Participants include 2004 NAIA National Champion Cal Baptist, Pacific and Loyola Chicago. Lewis will play Pacific on Feb. 4 and Cal Baptist on Feb. 5. Both matches are slated for 6:30 p.m.
