In front of 2,500 Hawaii fans, the Lewis University men's volleyball team lost to the Outrigger Invitational host 31-33, 25-30, 27-30.
The Flyers (0-2) held a late lead in game 1 and was within two points in the closing two games before Hawaii was able to escape with wins in each game.
In game 1, a Matt Mueller kill gave Lewis a 26-23 lead. However, a service error and consecutive hitting errors tied the game at 26-all.
The teams then traded side outs until Lewis had its first crack at game point. Hawaii (2-0) answered with a kill from Maulia La Barre the knotted the game at 29-all. Jeff Soler (Delray Beach, Fla./Spanish River)'s kill on the ensuing play handed Lewis its second shot at game point. Another untimely service error re-tied the game at 30-30. Hawaii then took the lead 31-30 after a kill from Jose Delgado. Soler answered with a kill for Lewis to stave off a Hawaii game point, but the Warriors scored the next two points on a kill by Delgado and a Flyer hitting error.
Lewis was within two at 24-22 in the second game, but Hawaii outscored the Flyers 6-3 over the final nine points to take a two games to none lead.
In game 3, the Flyers trailed 27-25, but another untimely service error gave Hawaii a 29-26 lead and the teams traded side outs for Hawaii's 30-27 win.
Soler paced Lewis with 15 kills, while Enrique Escalante had 13 kills and two blocks. Setter Brandon Sisk passed out 41 assists and libero J.J. Castellano tallied a match-high 11 digs.
Lewis will complete play in the Outrigger Invitational Friday, Jan. 7 when it takes on Penn State at 4 p.m. (HST).
