ALLENDALE, Mich. -
Lewis rallied from an 11-point deficit to take a pair of late leads, but Amanda Sieja's jumper in the lane with 29 seconds remaining gave Michigan Tech a 56-55 win Friday at Grand Valley State University's Days Inn Classic.
Trailing 40-29 with 16:05 to play, the Flyers (1-2) began to assemble a 24-12 run that would give them a 53-52 edge at the 1:57 mark. The outburst featured 10 points from Mary Moskal, who started and ended the surge, seven points from Darcee Schmidt and at least one free throw from four other players.
After Jenna Bartels' bucket on Tech's next possession put the Huskies (2-1) back up momentarily, Shante Glenn answered with a layup for a 55-54 Lewis lead with 1:03 remaining. But Sieja collected Bartels' missed 3-pointer on Tech's next trip down the floor and sank the winning basket seconds later.
The Flyers had two shots in the closing seconds but were unable to convert.
Michigan Tech tallied the first six points of the game, but Lewis responded by scoring the next nine for its biggest lead of the game. Following three ties, Tech took the first-half lead for good on Sieja's conventional 3-point play at 6:45, and the Huskies led 27-26 at the break.
The Flyers were plagued by cold field-goal shooting (17-of-54, 32 percent). A 77-percent effort (17-of-22) at the foul line, including 11-of-14 in the second half, allowed Lewis to makes its challenge. Michigan Tech shot 39 percent (22-of-57) from the floor and 91 percent (10-of-11) at the stripe.
Schmidt (15), Moskal (13) and Glenn (12) combined for 40 of the Flyers' 55 points and tied for team rebounding honors with seven boards apiece, including Schmidt's five offensive caroms. Glenn added four assists and four steals, and Brittney Diener chipped in five assists and three steals. Jackie Waller scored seven points off the bench in just 13 minutes.
Sieja, the only Tech player to score in double figures, netted a game-high 19 points. Catherine Rottier grabbed 14 rebounds.
The Flyers take on host Grand Valley State Saturday at 7 p.m. EST.
