Enrique Escalante set the tone for a strong serving night for the Lewis University men's volleyball team as he tied a school record with six aces.
Escalante becomes the fifth Lewis player to record six aces in a match. Jorge Perez was the last to accomplish the feat when he tallied six aces against Clarke on April 20, 2001.
The Flyers (7-6, 6-1 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) utilized nine aces to beat Mercyhurst 30-15, 28-30, 30-18, 30-26.
Lewis' tough serves helped limit Mecyhurst to a .173 hitting percentage. The serves also kept the Lakers out of rhythm and led to 18 team blocks for Lewis.
Three Flyers hit .500 or better for the match and five Lewis players recorded at least five blocks.
Jeff Soler paced Lewis with 17 kills, a .577 hitting percentage and five blocks. Jared Dayton added 13 kills, four digs and five blocks. Matt Mueller posted 12 kills, a career-high seven blocks and hit .529. Greg Pochopien chipped in with eight kills and a match-high eight blocks.
Setters Tom Mendoza and Brandon Sisk passed out 30 and 15 assists, respectively.
Austin Siewert led Mercyhurst (5-5, 3-5 MIVA) with 10 kills, five blocks and a .563 hitting percentage.
Lewis will spend the next month on the road before returning home for a MIVA showdown with Ohio State on March 19.
