Jeff Soler had a perfect hitting evening as he recorded 11 kills on 11 swings to help lead the Lewis University men's volleyball team past Clarke College.
Soler accumulated his total in the first two games and did not play the third set. His performance established a school record for hitting percentage in a single match. Victor Rivera held the previous record with a .941 hitting percentage (16 kills-0 errors-17 attempts) on April 17, 1999.
The Flyers (5-5, 4-0 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) managed to hit .567 as a team and record seven aces.
Enrique Escalante tallied seven kills and a .750 hitting percentage. James Wilkes posted six kills without an error on eight attempts, while Greg Pochopien and Matt Mueller each had five kills. Jared Dayton added three aces and a team-high four blocks.
For Clarke (1-4, 0-4 MIVA), Jeff Simundic paced the team with 11 kills and just one hitting error in 13 attempts for a .769 hitting percentage. He also added a match-high four aces.
The Flyers will be idle for a week until they travel to Loyola Tuesday, Feb. 15. The matchup will pit the favorites for the MIVA regular-season title against each other at at 7 p.m. in Loyola's Alumni Gym
