ROMEOVILLE -
Sophomore second baseman Kevin Tyrrell had four hits and five RBI for Lewis, but Valparaiso came from behind in the late innings and posted a 12-6 non-conference baseball victory Tuesday.
Tyrrell hit his team-leading third home run of the season, a three-run shot to right field, in the third inning to cut the Valparaiso lead to 5-3. The homer followed a walk to Mike Loprieno and Andy Radak (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville)'s single.
The Flyers (1-9) took the lead with three more runs in the fourth. After the first two hitters were retired, Dave Tolchin reached on an error, Loprieno singled and Radak walked to load the bases. A walk to Billy Duffy forced in a run, and Tyrrell followed with a two-run single to center.
Three of Valparaiso's five first-inning runs were unearned off Lewis starter Jon Crettol, who settled down and struck out four in three innings of work. Jon Guzzo blanked the Crusaders (3-6) on just one hit in the middle three innings, but Valpo touched Adam Stabosz (0-1) for the decisive two runs in the seventh and five insurance runs in the ninth.
Tyrrell added a double and a stolen base for the Flyers, who host Upper Iowa Wednesday at noon in a makeup doubleheader.
