Flyers Nipped In Five By Findlay

ROMEOVILLE - Lewis middle blocker Enrique Escalante overcame a first-game injury to post 14 kills and a .500 hitting percentage Sunday, but Findlay erased a 7-3 deficit in game five and upset 14th-ranked Lewis 30-26, 30-28, 25-30, 26-30, 19-17 in a Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match.

Escalante hit 14-2-24 and added five blocks and four digs. Jared Dayton topped the Flyer kills chart with 16 and tallied five digs and three blocks, while Greg Pochopien collected 14 kills, six blocks and two service aces.

Matt Mueller notched 12 kills, six digs, three blocks and two service aces, and Jeff Soler registered 11 kills and six digs. Brandon Sisk handed out 49 assists and added four digs and three blocks, and libero J.J. Castellano was solid with 12 digs and no reception errors.

Findlay (14-10, 4-7) hit .484 to Lewis' .188 to win game one, then took a 2-0 advantage in a game two that saw both teams struggle to identical .103 hitting marks. Lewis (13-10, 8-2) won game three despite being outhit .241 to .194, then fashioned a sparkling .342 efficiency in game four to even the match.

Both teams had two match points in game five. Lewis led 17-16 before Findlay, which hit .417 in the final frame, grabbed the victory with a kill and two successive blocks.

C.J. Macias (24 kills, .347), Jim Dziczkowski (22 kills, 14 digs), Corey Oliver (12 kills), David Franklin (11 kills, .450, six blocks), Daniel Plotts (12 digs), Chris Keen (68 assists, five blocks) and John Breen (six blocks) led Findlay.

The Flyers host Chicagoland rival and MIVA leader Loyola Chicago Wednesday at 7 p.m.
