HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -
Kevin Jakubauskas hurled a four-hitter, and Andy Radak and Brian Clancy had two RBI apiece Sunday to lift Lewis to a 5-3 victory over Northern Kentucky in game one of a Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader.
In game two, Northern Kentucky overcame a 3-0 deficit and edged the Flyers 5-4.
Jakubauskas (2-4) went the seven-inning distance in the opener and allowed just one earned run and one walk while striking out four. He lowered his team-best earned-run average to 3.11.
The Flyers broke a scoreless tie and scored all five of their runs with two outs in the fourth inning. Mike Loprieno (Bloomingdale, Ill./Driscoll)'s bases-loaded single plated the first run, Radak followed with a two-run single and Clancy delivered a two-run double.
NKU tallied all three of its runs in the fifth, but Jakubauskas stranded the tying runs in that inning and allowed just one more baserunner - who reached on an error - the rest of the way.
Victor Naut had two hits while Billy Duffy, Brandon Niewinski, Phil Marchinski and Mike Smith each collected a hit.
Lewis (5-27, 3-17) carried the momentum into game two and took a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, fourth and fifth, all scoring with two outs. Marchinski drove in the first run with a double, Smith scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and Naut doubled in a run in the fifth.
NKU (11-11, 8-6) struck back with four runs (three unearned) in the fifth, the big blow being a 3-run home run by Alex Frank, and added what proved to be the decisive run in the sixth. The Flyers scored an unearned run in the ninth on Gregg Degen (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park)'s two-out single and had the bases loaded, but NKU reliever Steve Thomas got the final out for his fourth save.
Flyer starter Jon Crettol (2-4) allowed eight hits and just two earned runs in five innings and absorbed the loss. Adam Stabosz tossed three innings and gave just three hits and a walk.
Duffy, Marchinski and Jim Gabriel had two hits apiece in the nightcap for Lewis, which hosts Indianapolis in a GLVC doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m.
