EVANSVILLE, Ind. -
Jon Guzzo collected two hits in each game Saturday in Lewis University's 4-1, 4-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader loss to Southern Indiana.
Andy Radak also had two hits in the 7-inning opener while Billy Duffy, Kevin Tyrrell and Victor Naut had one hit apiece.
The Flyers scored their only run in the fourth inning when Tyrrell led off with a single, went to second on Phil Marchinski (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville)'s ground ball and scored on Naut's single. USI tallied single runs in the first, second, third and fifth frames off Lewis starter Kevin Jakubauskas (2-5), who allowed nine hits, three earned runs and two walks and fanned one.
Southern Indiana (19-19, 11-11) jumped to a 2-0 lead after an inning in the nightcap, but the Flyers (6-30, 4-20) tied it in the fourth with two unearned runs. Naut reached on an error and scored on a triple by Radak, who scored on Mike Smith (Lemont, Ill./Lemont)'s sacrifice fly.
After the Screaming Eagles plated two runs in the sixth, Lewis responded with another unearned run in the seventh. One-out singles by Guzzo and Dave Tolchin gave the Flyers runners at first and third. Jim Gabriel lined out, and Guzzo scored when the USI first baseman misplayed the throw from shortstop in an attempt to complete a double play.
Lewis starter Jon Crettol (2-5) went the distance and struck out seven. Crettol yielded 10 hits and two walks and allowed just five hits after a rocky first inning. Naut, Marchinski and Smith each had a hit.
Lewis and USI play another doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
