HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -
Jon Guzzo went toe-to-toe with 2004 Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year Derrik Moeves of Northern Kentucky in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, and the Flyer freshman came up just short in a 2-0 loss.
NKU won the nightcap 7-5 to complete the twinbill sweep.
Guzzo (0-5) enjoyed his best outing of the year in the 7-inning opener, allowing just seven hits, walking nobody and striking out three. He was touched for single runs in the second and third innings.
Unfortunately, the veteran Moeves (2-3) was a bit better. He yielded just three hits - a double by Kevin Tyrrell and singles by Billy Duffy and Phil Marchinski - walked one and hit a batter while fanning nine.
Lewis (4-26, 2-16) outhit NKU (10-10, 7-5) 10-8 and battled to the end in the nightcap. But porous defense undermined a solid effort by Flyer starter Joe Walsh (1-5), who allowed just six hits and two walks in five innings. Three of the four runs Walsh allowed were unearned.
The Flyers struck first, scoring a run in the opening frame on Victor Naut (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick)'s two-out single that plated Duffy, who led off with a single.
After NKU scored the tying run in the second and three runs in the fifth for a 4-1 lead, Lewis charged back with two runs in the seventh. Brandon Niewinski (Morris, Ill./Morris)'s double scored Duffy, who reached on a bunt single, and Mike Smith, who reached on an error.
The Norse got those two runs back in their half of the seventh, and the teams traded runs again in the eighth. For Lewis, Brian Clancy and Jim Gabriel walked and advanced on a ground ball, and Duffy's ground ball scored Clancy.
The Flyers rallied with two outs in the ninth and had the tying runs at first and second. Mike Loprieno singled, went to third when Andy Radak reached on an error and scored on Clancy's infield single before NKU's Steve Thomas nailed down his third save in relief of starter Rick Wood (3-0).
Duffy, Smith and Niewinski each had two hits for the Flyers, who play another doubleheader at NKU on Sunday.
