ROMEOVILLE -
Mike Smith collected four hits Saturday in the Lewis University baseball team's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader loss to Quincy.
In game one, Smith, Brandon Niewinski, Kevin Tyrrell and Victor Naut (double) had the Flyers' four hits in a 5-0 loss. Catcher Phil Marchinski threw out three potential base stealers.
Smith was 3-for-4 with a double, Naut was 2-for-5 with a double, and Niewinski and Andy Radak were 2-for-5 in the nightcap, a 9-6 Quincy win. The Flyers outhit the Hawks 13-9.
The Flyers (10-42, 8-30) scored a run in the first when Smith doubled, went to third on a ground ball and scored on Tyrrell's ground ball.
Trailing 6-1, Lewis got back in the game with a two-run fifth. Niewinski and Tyrrell produced one-out singles, Niewinski scored on Naut's double and Tyrrell scored on Jim Gabriel (Orland Park, Ill./Providence)'s sacrifice fly.
Single runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth gave Quincy (29-23, 21-15) a 9-3 advantage, but the Flyers did not go quietly in their final at-bat.
Lewis loaded the bases on singles by Smith and Niewinski and Tyrrell's hit-by-pitch. Consecutive one-out RBI singles by Gabriel, Radak and Dave Tolchin cut the Hawks' lead in half and brought the potential winning run to the plate, but unfortunately the rally stalled.
The Flyers conclude their season Sunday with a noon doubleheader against Quincy.
