The Lewis University men's soccer team made a valiant comeback Friday night in its first road game of the season, but host Gannon scored in the fifth minute of overtime to secure a 3-2 non-conference victory.
The Flyers (1-1), tied for 17th nationally in NCAA Division II, trailed 2-0 early in the second half after Gannon's Adam Maduri (unassisted) scored the first of his two goals at the 49:11 mark.
Scott Hall, assisted by John Solberg, cut Gannon's lead in half at 61:04 with his first goal of the season. Gavin Grogan (Dublin, Ireland/Blakestown Community)'s unassisted goal at 82:46, also his first of the year, came from 25 yards out and knotted the game at 2-2.
Gannon, however, managed to contain the Lewis momentum and hang on for overtime. Maduri, assisted by Jonathan Brickman and Sam Kingston, netted his second goal of the game and third of the season 4:55 into the extra period.
Dan Howell (Gareth Kolkenbeck) scored his first goal of the season at 11:11 to give Gannon (2-1) a 1-0 lead.
Anthony Szymel played the first 62:05 in goal for the Flyers and recorded two saves before being relieved by Dan Breen. Gannon's Alex Scott stopped five Lewis shots.
Lewis posted a 7-5 edge in shots on goal and earned a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, while Gannon edged the Flyers 16-13 in total shots.
The Flyers remain in Erie to take on Mercyhurst Sunday.
