Flyers Fall To NJIT In Home Opener

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Drew Pickering registered a team and a season high with 21 kills, but the Flyers fell to New Jersey Institute of Technology in five games, 29-31, 26-30, 30-26, 30-27, 10-15 Friday night in non-conference action at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers drop to 2-2, while the Highlanders improve to 2-0 on the season.

Pickering also led the Flyers with seven digs. Alex Vigansky and Craig Boller each tallied 14 kills, hitting .524 and .462 respectively. Nick Perakes and Zak Krumlinde each added six digs for the Flyers. Jordan Vidovic and David Taylor both totaled 31 assists.

It was all Highlanders in the fifth and deciding game, as they produced their best hitting percentage of any game (.624) while limiting the Flyers the their lowest of the match (.125). The Highlanders took a commanding 9-3 lead before cruising to the 15-10 match win.

The Highlanders jumped to a 2-0 match lead by hitting .524 percent in the first game and .313 percent in the second contest, while limiting the Flyers to a .243 hitting percentage in game one and .176 in the second.

Boller, who was held to three kills through the first two games, notched five in game three and four more in the fourth contest to help the Flyers rally to a 2-2 tie in the match and force a fifth game.

Leonardo Paludo posted a match-high 24 kills for the Highlanders, and Eduardo Welter added 21 kills and a match-high 12 digs.

The Flyers set a season high with 15 aces in the match. Four of those aces came consecutively off the serve of Jordan Vidovic late in the first game, as he nearly single-handedly pulled out a Flyers' win.

The Flyers play again next Friday when they host conference foe IPFW at 7 pm.
