Darcee Schmidt (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem)'s game-high 20 points powered the Flyers past Southern Illinois Edwardsville 73-56, in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Thursday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
Lewis improved to 12-6 (8-2 GLVC), while the Cougars fell to 9-9 (3-7 GLVC) on the season.
Schmidt shot 8-of-13 from the field, went 3-of-3 from 3-point range and was 1-of-1 at the free-throw line. Mary Moskal, Jackie Waller and Shante Glenn joined Schmidt in scoring double figures. Moskal had 13 points, while Waller and Glenn each tallied a dozen.
The Flyers were already up 6-0 by the time the Cougars scored their first points of the night, and Lewis held the lead for the rest of the game. The Cougars managed to close to within one point on three occasions over a 2:16 span in the first half, the last being at the 12:38 mark, but they did not get any closer.
With Lewis leading by nine points with 8:23 to play in the first, the Cougars summoned an 8-2 run to come to within three points with 5:48 left in the half. The Flyers quickly regained momentum, however, and they closed out the half on a 12-5 spurt thanks in part to 3-pointers from Waller and Schmidt.
Lewis kept it going in the second half, increasing their eight-point advantage to as many as 22 points before running away with the 17-point win.
Whitney Sykes led the Cougars with 14 points, and Julianne McMillen added 12.
The Cougars hit 19-of-21 from the foul line, limiting the Flyers to just 4-of-5 at the stripe, but they only shot 31.4 percent from the field. Lewis was a crisp 50.8 percent from the floor, and they out-rebounded the Cougars 35-30.
The Flyers return to the floor on Saturday afternoon when they host Quincy at 1 pm.
