FAYETTE, Iowa -
A hat trick by Cory Mastey powered the Lewis University men's soccer team to a 3-2 non-conference victory over Upper Iowa Wednesday afternoon.
Mastey's performance boosted his team-leading totals to 11 goals and 25 points. The hat trick is the Flyers' first since Cathal Brady scored three times in a 5-0 win over Saint Joseph's last season.
Upper Iowa (2-12-1) struck first as Craig Signorin, assisted by Jacob Rasbeck, scored at 18:01.
Ryan Doody tallied his second assist of the season on Mastey's first goal at 36:06. Mastey took a feed from Joey De Francesco, who also registered his second assist, and made it 2-1 Flyers with just 15 seconds remaining in the first half.
Charlie Bucio collected his first collegiate assist on Mastey's third goal at 61:50. A goal by Upper Iowa's Steven Fellhauer (Signorin, Rasbeck) at 72:21 made it a game again, but Lewis tightened its defense and held on for the victory that improved its record to 12-5.
Winning goalkeeper Brian Byrne made four saves before being relieved by Anthony Szymel. The Flyers earned advantages of 14-9 in total shots and 12-3 in corner kicks.
Lewis travels to Rockhurst on Sunday for a Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship first-round game.
