Nov. 18, 2006

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Darcee Schmidt and Kelly Dianis combined for 41 points, including 8-for-12 from 3-point range, as the Lewis Flyers held off Michigan Tech 82-69, Saturday afternoon at SDC Gymnasium.

Schmidt led all scorers, totaling 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field with four 3-pointers, while Dianis scored 20 on 6-for-12 shooting with four treys. The Flyers shot 45.8 percent from beyond the arc, compared to just 22.7 percent by Michigan Tech.

In addition to the hot outside shooting, the Flyers received double-double efforts from Mary Moskal and Brittney Diener. Moskal registered 19 points and ten rebounds, while Diener added 10 boards and 10 assists. Erin Cox contributed 13 points.

The Huskies led only twice in the game, with both leads occurring within the game's first four minutes.

Tech held a 9-8 advantage with 16:05 to go in the first before the Flyers went on a 15-2 spurt to take a commanding 12-point lead which they would never relinquish. The Flyers pushed the advantage to 14 points by halftime.

A 3-pointer by Schmidt at the 18:45 mark of the second half gave the Flyers their largest lead of the game at 19 points.

Never letting up, the Huskies cut the Flyers' lead to five points thanks to a 3-pointer by Catherine Rottier at 9:52, but as was the case most of the night, the Flyers had an answer.

Schmidt scored a layup on the next possession and added a 3-pointer on the next trip down the floor to put Lewis back up by 10 points.

When Tech cut the margin to six points with six minutes to play, it was Cox who answered with a trey, killing another Huskies' run.

Lena Widman led Tech with 16 points, despite fouling out with 4:55 to play. Rottier was the only other Huskie to score in double figures, totaling 13 points.

Lewis (2-0) hosts Ferris State on Tuesday at Neil Carey Arena for the Flyers' home opener at 5:30 p.m.
