Mary Moskal scored a game-high 21 points as Lewis managed to hang on for a 72-69 win over non-conference foe Ferris State, Tuesday evening in the Flyers' home opener at Neil Carey Arena.
Lewis (3-0) took control of a tight game late in the first half by snapping a 35-35 tie with a 10-0 run to end the half. The Flyers kept the throttle down in the second half, pushing their lead to 20 at 10:52 and holding a 19-point advantage with 7:21 to play, but the offense sputtered from there.
Ferris State (2-1) outscored the Flyers 18-2 over the final seven minutes of the game and missed what would have been a game-tying 3-pointer as time expired to let Lewis escape with the win.
After holding a 19-point lead with 7:21 to play, the Flyers did not make another field goal the rest of the game. Lewis went 0-for-8 from the floor during the Bulldogs' run. A Moskal free throw with 31 seconds to play and a Jenn Green free throw with 10 seconds to play accounted for Lewis' only points in the game's final seven minutes.
Moskal finished the night 7-of-14 from the field and 6-of-9 from the free throw line. She also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds and had six assists. Darcee Schmidt scored 18 points with five boards, and Kelly Dianis totaled 11 points with five rebounds. Green and Jenna Mooberry each added eight points for Lewis.
Erin Miller paced the Bulldogs with 21 points, and Rachel Folick scored 19. Sam Johns posted a double-double of 11 points and 14 boards, while Audrey Thwing scored nine and brought down 10 rebounds.
The Flyers shot 36.9 percent for the game, compared to 41.4 percent by the Bulldogs. Ferris State made 13-of-15 from the free throw line, including 10-of-11 in the second half. The Flyers went 15-of-24 from the stripe, only making 10-of-18 in the second half.
Lewis plays at North Dakota on Friday at 4 pm.
