ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Led by Darcee Schmidt and Jenna Mooberry with 15 points apiece, five Flyers reached double figures in scoring as Lewis upset No. 21 Drury 76-64 Thursday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
The Flyers improved to 5-1 (1-0 GLVC), while Drury dropped to 1-3 (0-1 GLVC).
Schmidt's 15 points were part of a double-double effort which included a game-high 15 rebounds. Mooberry set a career high with her 15 points, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Kelly Dianis scored 14 points, all in the second half, and Mary Moskal added 13 with six rebounds. Erin Cox totaled 10 points with eight boards and five assists. Brittney Diener (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac)'s seven assists led all players, and she scored six points.
A 3-pointer by Mooberry at 6:01 of the first half settled what was, up until that point, a back-and-forth contest with seven lead changes. The basket gave the Flyers a 25-24 lead, and Lewis never trailed again.
The Flyers took a five-point lead into halftime and pushed it to a game-best 16-point cushion by 16:54 of the second half, but Lewis still had to withstand one last push by the Lady Panthers.
Spurred by a 15-4 run, Drury managed to climb back in the game midway through the second half. The Lady Panthers cut Lewis' lead to three points at the 7:26 mark and again with 5:22 to play before Lewis charged back with nine unanswered points over a three-minute span to put the game out of reach.
The Flyers' 9-0 run included a 3-pointer and layup from Cox and a 3-pointer from Dianis. The Flyers also went 9-for-10 at the line down the stretch.
Drury was led in scoring by Becky Flippin, who posted a game high of 18 points. Teammate Lauren Gregory added 15.
The Flyers shot 41.4 percent for the game, compared to 30.8 percent by Drury.
The Flyers return to action on Saturday, hosting Rockhurst at 1 pm.
