Schmidt's 25 Leads Lewis Past Rockhurst

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - A season-high 25 points from Darcee Schmidt led the way for the Lewis Flyers in a 74-60 win over Rockhurst Saturday afternoon in conference action at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers improved to 6-1 (2-0), while the Hawks dropped to 2-4 (0-2).

Schmidt's 25 led all scorers and was two shy of her career-best scoring effort. She shot 9-of-13 from the floor and made 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Schmidt also collected six rebounds and matched a career best with six steals.

Mary Moskal added 20 points, going 10-of-12 at the stripe. She also registered four rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Other leading scorers for the Flyers included Lauresha Hawkins and Kelly Dianis with six points each and Kaci Baird with five points. Brittney Diener pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and had five assists.

Lewis never trailed in the game but almost managed to blow a 21-point lead in the final minutes of the first half into the early minutes of the second half, as the Flyers' offense went cold.

For the final 2:26 of the first and the first 4:14 of the second half, the Flyers didn't score a singe point. Rockhurst took advantage with a 14-0 run, and came to within three points of the Flyers at the 16:56 mark of the second half.

A layup by Cox at 15:46 gave the Flyers their first points in over seven minutes of playing time, making the score 41-36, but a 3-pointer from Hawks' sophomore Julie Cook cut the Flyers lead to just two points with 15:38 to play.

Dianis drained a 3-pointer on the next trip down the court, putting Lewis back up by five, and the lead increased from there. By the 11:12 mark, the Flyers once again held a double-digit advantage. Lewis went on to lead by as many as 19 points before finishing with the 14-point win.

Leading scorers for Rockhurst were Courtney Farmer with 15 points and Kate Carr with 12. Cook had a game-best eight assists.

The Flyers shot 51 percent for the game, while limiting the Hawks to 36.7 percent. Lewis made 19-of-25 from the stripe, holding the Hawks to 7-of-10, and collected 36 rebounds to the Hawks' 30 boards.

The Flyers return to action Thursday, playing at Quincy at 5:15 pm.
