QUINCY, Ill. -
Darcee Schmidt posted a double-double of 18 points and a season-high 13 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the Flyers in a 74-72 setback to Quincy, Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Schmidt was joined in double figures in scoring by Mary Moskal with 16 points and Erin Cox with 12. Brittney Diener had a game-high seven assists and scored four points. Kelly Dianis, Lauresha Hawkins, Jenna Mooberry and Mandie Morelock each added five points.
The Flyers (6-2, 2-1) dominated the action from the start and never trailed for the first two-thirds of the game. With 12:20 to play in the game, Lewis led by its biggest margin of the night at 51-39. Unfortunately for the Flyers, the lead didn't hold.
Taking advantage of two Lewis turnovers, the Lady Hawks buried consecutive 3-pointers to quickly cut Lewis' lead in half. The 6-0 spurt turned into a 16-3 run, and by the 7:20 mark, the Lady Hawks had a 55-54 lead on the Flyers.
The game went back and forth down the stretch with the teams exchanging the lead eight more times, but the Lady Hawks were able to come out on top thanks in part to 6-of-6 free throw shooting in the game's final 1:20.
Jenny Wisser led the Lady Hawks with a game-best 19 points, 16 of which came in the second half.
Both teams shot 45 percent from the floor for the game, but the Lady Hawks shot 56 percent from the field and made six of their seven 3-pointers in the second half.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday, playing at Southern Illinois Edwardsville at 1 pm.
