FLORENCE, Ky. -
Northern Kentucky captured both games of Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader against Lewis, giving the Norse a sweep of the four-game weekend series.
Lewis fell 4-3 in Sunday's seven-inning opener despite out-hitting NKU 6-4, then dropped a 5-1 decision in the nightcap.
The Flyers took a first-inning lead in game one. Kevin Tyrrell led off with a walk, went to second on Billy Duffy (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central)'s single and scored on Victor Naut (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick)'s one-out single.
NKU retaliated with single runs in the first and third innings and took a 4-1 lead with two runs in the fifth.
In the sixth, Naut made it a one-run game with a double that plated Duffy, who had singled, and Darryl Jenkins, who had walked. Jim Gabriel walked two outs later to put the potential go-ahead run on, but NKU reliever Steve Thomas squelched the rally and worked around Duffy's two-out single in the seventh to nail down his third save.
Lewis starter Joe Walsh (0-4) allowed just two hits and struck out five in 4 1/3 innings. Jon Crettol helped keep the Flyers' hopes alive by tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Winning pitcher Matt Winterhalter (2-2) lasted five innings and yielded one run, three hits and one walk while striking out four.
Another Naut double and singles by Duffy and Brian Clancy were the only hits Lewis (1-15, 0-8 GLVC) could muster in game two. The Flyers scored their only run in the fifth when Gabriel led off with a walk, advanced to second on Brandon Niewinski (Morris, Ill./Morris)'s sacrifice and to third on Clancy's single, and scored on Duffy's ground ball.
Nathan Jones (1-0) recorded the win for NKU (11-8-1, 9-4-1 GLVC), going six innings and allowing one run, two hits and two walks while fanning seven. Tim Harmatys (1-1), who struck out four and walked none in 6 2/3 innings, absorbed the loss.
The Flyers host Wisconsin-Parkside Wednesday in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at noon.
