Flyers Come Up Short At No. 5 SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis Flyers (24-8, 10-4) pounded out nine hits in game two of a conference doubleheader against No. 5 Southern Illinois Edwardsville (35-5, 11-1) Friday afternoon but ended up on the short end of a 2-1 decision.

Sabra McCune provided a four-hit, seven-strikeout performance and hit a three-run home run to lift SIUE to a 6-2 win in the opener.

Trailing 1-0 in the second game, Robin Martz singled home Beth Shelus with the tying run in the top of the third inning, but the Cougars answered in their half of the frame.

Holly Neuerburg led-off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Alicia DeShasiera.

The Flyers had a prime scoring opportunity in the sixth inning when singles by Shannon Roney and Amy Yusko led to runners on second and third with only one out, but Cougar pitcher Kaitlin Colosimo got the next two batters to end the threat.

Colosimo (11-0) struck out six batters in her complete-game effort to pick up the win. Julie Wingerter (10-2) suffered the loss for the Flyers. Wingerter allowed eight hits, six walks, two runs while striking out one.

Martz was 2-for-4 in the game, while Roney and Mallory Paine each went 2-for-3. Shelus and Kelly Dianis notched Lewis' other hits in the game.

McCune's (19-4) three-run shot in the first game came in the bottom of the third inning. The Cougars added one more tally in the fourth and held a 4-0 advantage until the top of the sixth when Lewis got two runs on a double by Kristy Vanek.

SIUE plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Courtney Lyons (7-5) took the loss for Lewis, giving up four hits and four runs over 3 1/3 innings. Roney pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and two runs with one strikeout.

Vanek's double was one of four hits for the Flyers. Roney added a double, while Dianis and Yusko each singled in the game.

The Flyers look to regroup on Saturday when they head to Evansville, Ind. to take on Southern Indiana at 11 am.
