EVANSVILLE, Ind. -
Lisa Gartland went the distance for the Lewis Flyers (25-9, 11-5), scattering five hits and allowing just one earned run in a 7-1 victory over Southern Indiana in game two of a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Southern Indiana (27-14, 9-5) scored in their final at-bat for a 4-3 victory in the first game.
The Flyers scored first in game two, tallying three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Kelly Dianis led off the frame with a double and later scored, along with Jessica Beck, when the Southern Indiana second baseman booted a ball off the bat of Gartland. Ashley LeGrand singled home Gartland later in the inning for the third run.
Southern Indiana responded with one run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Flyers answered with two more tallies in the fifth.
Robin Martz reached on an error to lead off the inning, and then scored on a throwing error when Mallory Paine laid down a sacrifice bunt. Kristy Vanek ripped a single through the left side to bring Paine home.
Vanek added another RBI single in the Flyers' two-run seventh inning.
Gartland (4-0) struck out two batters and walked only one to pick up the win.
Julie Wingerter (10-3) suffered the loss for the Flyers in the first game. She struck out five over six innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs.
The Flyers scored three times in the top of the second inning and held the lead until the bottom of the sixth when Southern Indiana scored three times to tie the game. A two-RBI single by Angie Davis highlighted the rally.
A Flyers' fielding error on a base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed the winning run to score from second base for Southern Indiana.
Gartland and Beth Shelus each tallied an RBI in the game. Amy Yusko went 2-for-3 with a double. Dianis also doubled, and Vanek, Shannon Roney and Christina Willis each singled.
The Flyers return to action on Tuesday with a home doubleheader against non-conference foe Bethel at 3 pm.
