ROLLA, Mo. -
Lewis exploded for a season-high 10 runs and defeated Missouri-Rolla 10-6 Sunday in game two of a Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader.
In the seven-inning opener, three Missouri-Rolla pitchers combined on a two-hitter in a 4-1 UMR victory.
The Flyers (6-34, 5-27 GLVC) scored in six of nine innings in the nightcap, including a four-run outburst in the fifth. Darryl Jenkins was 3-for-4 and scored three runs, Phil Marchinski, Victor Naut and Jim Gabriel collected two hits apiece and Gabriel tallied three RBI.
Lewis jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first. Marchinski and Jenkins produced one-out singles and advanced on a wild pitch. Naut's single scored Marchinski, and Jenkins scored on Tim Bingham (Plainfield, Ill./Westland, Mi./John Glenn)'s ground ball.
Gabriel singled and later scored on Chris Brigham (Bolingbrook, Ill./Romeoville)'s RBI single in the second inning to make it 3-0 Lewis. Missouri-Rolla (9-27, 7-22 GLVC) notched single runs in the second and third, but the Flyers got one of those runs back in the fourth when Brigham drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on an error.
The big blow in the fifth was Gabriel's bases-loaded triple that followed two walks and an error. He scored the fourth run of the inning on John Benisek (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian)'s infield single.
The Flyers added single runs in the sixth and eighth. Naut's double scored Jenkins, who had singled with two outs, in the sixth. Jenkins' eighth-inning RBI single accounted for Lewis' final run.
The Miners plated a run in the seventh and threatened to score more. But Jon Guzzo relieved starter Matt Rolle (1-3) with one out and two runners aboard and retired the next two hitters.
In the eighth, Missouri-Rolla narrowed the gap with three runs before Guzzo halted the rally with his third strikeout of the inning. The sophomore left-hander retired the side in order in the ninth, including two more strikeouts, to preserve the victory.
Rolle was solid, fanning eight and allowing three runs, seven hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings. Dave DeClue (0-8) absorbed the loss for UMR.
In the opener, Missouri-Rolla made a second-inning run stand up until a two-out Lewis rally in the sixth allowed the Flyers to even the score. After Billy Duffy broke up freshman Mark Phillips' no-hit bid with a single and Marchinski was hit by a pitch, Jenkins greeted reliever Stephen Hiatt with a run-producing single.
Unfortunately, the Miners struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning to make a winner out of Hiatt (1-5). Colin Moore pitched a perfect seventh for his third save.
Adam Stabosz (0-5) tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed four runs (three earned), four hits and four walks while striking out three.
The Flyers return to Brennan Field for a GLVC doubleheader against Saint Joseph's on Wednesday. Game time is 4 p.m.
